Following Patanjali, the focus of Yoga began to shift, leading to the Post-Classical Period. This era saw the rise of Hatha Yoga, a system that emphasized physical purification and strengthening as a prerequisite for higher states of meditation. Texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) detailed various asanas, pranayamas, mudras (hand gestures), and bandhas (energy locks).

Hatha Yoga was revolutionary because it recognized the body as a vehicle for spiritual awakening, rather than just an obstacle. It aimed to balance the "ha" (sun, active energy) and "tha" (moon, passive energy) within the body. This development laid the groundwork for the more physically oriented Yoga styles popular today.

 

Modern Yoga: From East to West (1700 CE - Present)

 

The journey of Yoga to the Western world began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily through figures like Swami Vivekananda, who introduced Yoga and Vedanta philosophy at the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago.

However, it was in the mid-20th century that Yoga truly gained traction, largely due to influential teachers such as B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, and T. Krishnamacharya. They developed and popularized styles like Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and Vinyasa Flow Yoga, which focused heavily on physical postures, alignment, and dynamic sequences. These styles made Yoga more accessible and appealing to a broader audience, emphasizing physical health, flexibility, and strength.
